The Festival of Place. Why we keep going back.

EGY returned to the Festival of Place at Boxpark Wembley in July. One of the few events in the built environment calendar that makes the sector feel genuinely energised rather than self-satisfied.

It is not the format that makes it worth attending. It is the room. Local authorities alongside investors, designers, developers and community groups, all in the same space, actually talking to each other. Less set-piece conference, more serious conversation about what we are building and why.

The talks and workshops covered the questions that matter. How do we design with equality and equity, not just for it? How do infrastructure, landscape, climate resilience and community get woven into something tangible rather than aspirational? The fishbowl discussion format, in particular, allowed ideas to be tested rather than performed.

For EGY, the value was less in gathering new information and more in having the instinct confirmed: that the best built environment thinking is already moving away from siloed disciplines and box-ticking delivery. Blue-green infrastructure, human-centred design, systems thinking. These are not niche positions. The room at Festival of Place treats them as the baseline.

We returned with fresh connections, sharper thinking, and the same conclusion we reach every year. The work matters. The conversation is worth having. We will be back.
