To us, social value is the measurable difference our work makes to people, places and planet, beyond what our clients commission.
It is generated through our passion, ambition and commitment: whether that’s the knowledge we share freely with our industry, the communities we support, or the deliberate choices we make as a business.
To us, social value is not a reporting obligation we fulfil annually. It is the standard against which we hold every decision we make.
We started EGY with a simple belief: engineering carries a responsibility beyond the project and beyond the fee. To the environment, to communities and to the generations that follow.
We are small by design, not by default, and that choice is deliberate. It gives our people the freedom to be curious, to follow an idea, to support a community, and to pursue what they are passionate about without waiting for permission.
The absence of hierarchy is not an operational choice. It is a cultural one. It creates a practice where curiosity is the norm and where doing the right thing does not require a business case.
Social value, to us, is not a framework we comply with. It is the measure of whether our work has made a genuine difference, to our people, to the communities we work within, to the wider industry we are part of, and to the local economy we choose to support. We hold ourselves accountable to that measure, publicly and annually, because accountability without transparency is just intention.

Beyond the projects EGY Trust delivers directly, this is how social value shows up in the day-to-day running of the practice.
Backing seventeen young entrepreneurs
This year we sponsored the Youth Entrepreneurs Academy Haywards Heath (YEAHH), working alongside Haywards Heath Town Council and the Haywards Heath Business Association to support seventeen Year 10 and Year 12 students through the programme.
Ahead of their Business Fair at The Orchards Shopping Centre, we sat down with the students to help sharpen their pitch and value proposition, and talked through the logistics of the day so they arrived ready, not just rehearsed.
The students spent the spring working through masterclasses on marketing, finance and leadership before putting it all into practice in front of the public. Then they came back for a celebration evening where every one of them graduated with a certificate to show for it.
A new bridge for Bedelands Nature Reserve
This one didn’t come from a client brief. Through EGY Trust, we designed and built a new oak pedestrian bridge at Bedelands Nature Reserve in West Sussex, spanning a tributary of the River Adur upstream of Holmbush Mill.
The old crossing had become unsafe: a single handrail, and anti-slip strips that were curling up and catching feet. The replacement was designed by EGY Design and constructed by our sister company EGY Builds, built off-site and installed over a four-day site visit, combining modern engineering with traditional oak joinery. As with every EGY Trust project, materials, labour and professional time were donated in full. Even the timber from the old bridge was repurposed, laid across a muddy path between two meadows.
Futures Fair
We joined the Futures Fair at Baseline Studios in Kensington, exploring how sustainable drainage can do much more than simply manage rainfall.
Through an interactive model, we worked with attendees to explore what happens when we rethink the way water is managed within our towns and cities. Rather than taking rainwater underground and out of sight, the model demonstrated how it can be managed at the surface through rain gardens, planted areas, trees and other forms of blue-green infrastructure.
Attendees were able to interact with the model and see how relatively simple interventions could change the way a neighbourhood responds to rainfall, while opening up opportunities to create greener streets, support biodiversity, provide shade and improve the quality of the places people experience every day.
The conversations went beyond drainage. We explored the choices we make about how our streets and public spaces are designed, and how infrastructure that has traditionally served a single engineering function can become part of the lived experience of a place.
